Cecil “Cy” Frederick Dam – Professor Emeritus of Physics
Professor Emeritus of Physics Cecil “Cy” Frederick Dam died Oct. 7, 2015, in Ocala, Florida, at age 92.
He attended Kalamazoo College until he entered the service during World War II, where he served in the Pacific as a meteorologist. After receiving his doctorate in physics at Ohio State University, Dam taught physics at Cornell for 26 years, from 1958 to 1984. In 1959 and 1960 he directed the National Sciences Foundation conferences. He also worked at Oak Ridge and Argonne National Laboratories during sabbaticals. He was a member of the Optical Society of America, American Physical Society, American Association of Physics Teachers, American Meteorological Society, History of Science Society, Society for the History of Technology, and the Double Reed Society.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marilee, a son, Tim Dam ’76, a daughter, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a brother.
