In West Indian People and Culture, students spend three weeks immersed in the cultures of Trinidad and Barbados, two very distinct island nations. Special attention is given to Carnival — steel drums, calypsos, and masquerade — and also to folklore, pluralism and religion.

Chase Whitney ’02 develops wind energy projects
Chase Whitney ’02 is a business developer for Iberdrola Renewables, the world’s largest owner and operator of wind energy facilities. Whitney majored in Environmental Studies and History at Cornell and now lives in Denver, Colo.

Strains demonstrates opportunities for Cornell German students
After majoring in German, mathematics, and secondary education at Cornell, Jessie Strains will pursue a master’s in German at Bowling Green State University, including studies at the University of Salzburg. Her eventual goal is to teach at a German immersion school in the states, though she is also considering teaching abroad in a German-speaking country.

Mundell’s Vienna semester includes work at U.N.
Nathan Mundell spent two months in the spring semester of his junior year studying German at the Goethe Institut in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany. From there, he went directly to Vienna for a semester of study and work through the Central College Vienna Program.

French and religion professors lead course in Morocco
In May 2009, Cornell students traveled to Morocco with religion professor Steven Sacks and French professor Devan Baty for the course “Islam and Post-coloniality in Contemporary Morocco.” Students studied the general tenets of Islam, its particular manifestations and practices in Morocco, and the post-colonial relationship between Morocco and France.

Russian and politics major joins admissions staff
Brian Fuller ’07 earned degrees in Russian and politics at Cornell, including a semester spent studying in Russia as a senior. He’s found that many of the skills he learned at Cornell now serve him well closer to home in his role with the Cornell Admission Office.

Erceg applies Russian Fulbright experience to work with Slavic youth in U.S.
Laura Erceg ’06 earned a Fulbright award as a senior and spent 2006-07 in Vladivostok, Russia, working with at-risk youth for a variety of programs. As a student, she studied for a semester in Krasnodar, Russia through an Associated Colleges of the Midwest program.

Alumnus Ross joins staff to expand off-campus study opportunites
After graduating with a degree in Russian, Amanda Ross ’06 spent a year in Vladimir, Russia teaching English at the American Home, a small language school. She then returned to Cornell to staff the college’s newly established International and Off-Campus Studies Office.

During Block 7 2009, students in the course “City of Rome” explored the art, architecture, and history of Rome and the surrounding area. The course was co-taught by John Gruber-Miller, professor of classical studies, and Chris Penn-Goetsch, associate professor of art.
