The Saint Louis Brass Quintet to play year’s first Music Monday

Come see, hear, and enjoy the Saint Louis Brass Quintet for the first Music Monday of the year at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 14, in King Chapel.

2013-14 Fine Arts Calendar
Cornell’s fine arts events for 2013-2014 include a performance by The Brazilian Guitar Quartet, a co-production with Riverside Theatres of “Birth Witches” with Guest Director Artist Leda Hoffman, a variety of Luce Gallery shows including sabbatical work from art professor Tony Plaut opening Sept. 1, and the annual holiday choral concert.

Professor wins grant for new course
James Martin, professor of music at Cornell College, has been awarded a $25,000 grant by the National Endowment for the Humanities to create a course designed to study an enduring question. Martin’s course will examine the relationship between tradition and innovation.

Faculty Recital: Lisa Hearne, soprano; Joyce Strabala, piano
Soprano Lisa Hearne, professor of music, and Joyce Strabala, instructor of piano, will give a recital on Tuesday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Ringer Recital Hall of Armstrong Hall at Cornell College. The program includes Hermit Songs by Samuel Barber, The Promised Land, a new work of American spirituals by Gwyneth Walker, art songs in French and German, and songs from musical theater.

Chamberlain receives emeritus status
Don Chamberlain, longtime music professor and conductor of the Cornell College Jazz Ensemble, was awarded status as an emeritus professor after the ensemble’s concert on Dec. 11.

Handel’s “The Messiah” in photos

Martin has article published
An article by Profess of Music James Martin, “Confronting One’s Nazi Past: German Political History with Respect to Wagner and Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg,” appeared in the September 2012 issue of Wagner News (The Wagner Society of America). He continues to serve on the artistic advisory committee for Orchestra Iowa.

Messiah Community Choir begins Oct. 7
Local singers, along with faculty and staff of Cornell College, are invited to join community choir rehearsals in preparation for a performance of Handel’s Messiah. Rehearsals begin Oct. 7 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in McCague Hall of King Chapel and will continue every Sunday in October and November.

Jama Stilwell, associate professor of music, has won the Alfred Einstein Award of the American Musicological Society, which recognizes an article of exceptional merit.
