“The Cooptation of the word “Nigger”” by Bryan K Smith
Bryant K. Smith of Smith Consulting and Networking will conduct an interactive workshop on Feb 22nd. The program, a multi-media experience, will provide historical and theoretical background for the word and give its cultural significance in present day race relations and popular culture.

BACO presents: African Americans in the Arts
Dancing, singing, acting, creating artwork, and writing poetry. All these skills represent the arts and this program will highlight those African Americans who have contributed their talents to the arts.

Potters For Peace Luncheon
The Multicultural Council is sponsoring an informal luncheon with the executive board of Potters For Peace on Nov 11th. Professor Doug Hanson is hosting the annual meeting of the Potters For Peace executive board Nov. 10-14, and the 10-member board will be in attendance from Nicaragua, Canada, and across the United States.

Turkish Coffee, Baklava, and Gifts – Fundraiser for Earthquake Disaster Relief in Turkey
A fundraiser with Turkish items will be held on the OC on Nov 10th. Purchases assist the people of Van, Turkey–home of visiting Islamic Professor Nilay Ozok-Gundogan–whose earthquake-rattled city has seen many dead and missing, and thousands of people homeless and without warmth as winter sets in.

“You Mean There’s Race in My Movies? A Critical Analysis of Race in Mainstream Movies”
Fredrick Gooding Jr., founder of The Minority Reporter website, asserts that mainstream movies can have a strong cultural impact, particularly regarding the perpetuation of racial imagery and how Americans relate around notions of race.

“The Help” Screening: BACO, ICL, Sustained Dialogue Campus Discussion
BACO, the Intercultural Life Office, and Sustained Dialogue will host a private screening of “The Help” at 6 p.m. on Oct. 3. There will also be an open discussion at Armstrong House at noon on Oct. 8.

Healing vigil for Japan
The Cornell College Chaplain and Spiritual Life Office, it’s Soul Friends and Interfaith Understanding/Exploration
team, Civic Engagement Office, and Eyes of the World held a candlelight healing vigil for Japan disaster relief on Tuesday, April 12. The event raised money for Red Cross Japan. View a photo gallery in the full story. -
Rock’n the Box 2011
Aden Darity ’10 will headline “Rock’n the Box 2011,” a night of comedy, poetry, hip-hop, and dancing, hosted by Darius Ballard ’07 on April 8th. In addition to Darity, a number of Cornell students will perform at the event.
