Theatre department presenting Cloud 9 starting April 26
The Department of Theatre at Cornell College will present Caryl Churchill’s comedy Cloud 9 April 26 and 27 and May 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. and May 5 at 2 p.m. in the Plumb-Fleming Studio Theatre. Directed by Janeve West, Cloud 9 reveals the ties of colonial oppression and the bindings of post-colonial identities through cross-dressing, gender switching, and uproarious laughter.

Avenue Q runs Feb. 22-24 and March 1-3
Cornell College will present “Avenue Q” Feb. 22-23 and March 1-2 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 24 and March 3 at 2 p.m. in Kimmel Theatre. The show follows recent college grad Princeton, his former child-actor landlord, his Internet-addicted neighbor, and the rest of his colorful friends as they cope with the struggles of romance, careers, personal identity, and the ongoing search for one’s purpose in life.

Folk art exhibits
Two exhibits, “Traditional Mexican Folk Art from Michoacan: Selections from the Deibner-Hanson Collection,” and “Crafting Traditions: Oaxacan Wood Carvings” will be shown at the Peter Paul Luce Gallery Sunday, Jan. 20 through March 3.

Students learn puppetry from an expert
Students preparing for the Broadway hit musical “Avenue Q” got a chance to learn puppetry from world-renowned expert Emily DeCola of the Puppet Kitchen in New York.

Handel’s “The Messiah” in photos
The Cornell College and Mount Vernon Community choirs, along with Cornell alumni, performed Handel’s “The Messiah” on Dec. 1 as the annual holiday concert.

2012-2013 Fine Arts Calendar
Cornell’s fine arts events for 2012-2013 include performances of the Tony Award winning Avenue Q, a variety of Luce Gallery shows honoring recently retired art professor Doug Hanson, the return of the female vocal ensemble Tapestry, and the annual holiday choral concert.

Romeo and Juliet opens Oct. 12
Cornell College is producing the Shakespearean classic “Romeo and Juliet” October 12, 13, 19, and 20 at 7:30 and October 21 at 2:00 pm in Kimmel Theatre. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for seniors/students/youth and free with Cornell College ID.

Messiah Community Choir begins Oct. 7
Local singers, along with faculty and staff of Cornell College, are invited to join community choir rehearsals in preparation for a performance of Handel’s Messiah. Rehearsals begin Oct. 7 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in McCague Hall of King Chapel and will continue every Sunday in October and November.

Red Umbrella concert
Red Umbrella is a Canadian pop/rock band based in Indiana. Their newest album, “Living and Surviving,” incorporates synth and sampling giving the group a new, urban feel.

Concerts set for April 20 and 22
The Cornell College Orchestra, Chamber singers and Concert Choir will perform concerts in King Chapel on April 20 and 22 as part of the events of Inauguration weekend.

Reading by Visiting Writer Anne Sanow
Anne Sanow will read from her work and take questions from the audience. Sanow is the author of the story collection “Triple Time,” winner of the 2009 Drue Heinz Literature Prize and the 2010 L. L. Winship/PEN New England Award for fiction.

“R.E.S.P.E.C.T.” Exhibition at Cornell College
“R.E.S.P.E.C.T. The Symbiotic Relationship Between Teacher & Student,” will be exhibited at the Peter Paul Luce Gallery at Cornell College, Sunday, Feb. 26 through March 25.

‘In the Next Room’ goes up Feb. 17
The Cornell College theatre department is putting on “In the Next Room (or the Vibrator Play),” a provocative Tony-nominated sex comedy on Feb. 17, 18 and 24, 25 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.

BACO presents: African Americans in the Arts
Dancing, singing, acting, creating artwork, and writing poetry. All these skills represent the arts and this program will highlight those African Americans who have contributed their talents to the arts.

Jetty Rae concert
Originally from Michigan, Jetty Rae found her love of guitar playing in Hawaii. While there she became part of a hip-hop/rap group and toured for a period of time, eventually leaving for a more folk-type sound.
