Nate Frangella ’04
A first-year course gave Chicago native Nate Frangella ’04 a glimpse of elementary school teaching, and he never looked back. He had planned to become a high school history teacher, but says his early exposure to classroom teaching in Educational Psychology changed his mind.

Mark McDermott ’95
In 2009, Mark McDermott ’95 transferred his love for teaching high school science to a new venue: training future science educators as a professor at Wartburg College. McDermott teaches science methods courses, elementary education science content courses, and biology lab courses.

As a first grade teacher at an international school in Yangon, Myanmar, Emily Barbuto ’00 says she teaches the same way she would anywhere else. But there are plenty of other perks, such as money and opportunities for travel that have inspired her to write three novels.

Angara pursues international relations career after semester in Geneva
Smriti Angara entered Georgetown University’s program in international conflict resolution after graduating from Cornell in 2007. She wants to address conflicts over scarce resources such as oil and fresh water, and hopes to one day do research for a think tank or other non-governmental organization in Europe.

Laura Arnold ’04
Laura Arnold ’04 followed her love of books to Manhattan where she is an editor for Harper Collins Children’s Books. Arnold says she does everything from reading and evaluating manuscripts to acquiring and editing books while seeing them through the many steps of publication.

Danielle Bowen came to Cornell with interests in math and biology and left with a prestigious scholarship and solid grounding in the cutting-edge area of statistical genetics. Richard Small ’50, 2000 Honorary Degree
Richard Small ’50 received the honorary degree Dr. of Humanities from Cornell College on Sept. 30, 2000. Over the years he and his wife Norma have given millions of dollars to build Cornell’s endowment and contribute to the renovations of College, South, Law, Bowman-Carter, and Merner halls, as well as Cole Library and the Richard and Norma Small Life Sports Center.

Alumnus pledges $2 million challenge gift to renovate Cornell arts facilities
Jim McWethy, a Chicago-area businessman who rediscovered an affection for Cornell College some 25 years after graduation, has pledged $2 million toward the renovation of Cornell’s fine arts facilities if the college matches the gift 2-to-1 by Dec. 31, 2000. Fund raising for the $4 million balance has begun.
