James Swift '76 holds the 2026 Distinguished Achievement Award he received during Homecoming Weekend.Jim Swift ’76 received the 2026 Distinguished Achievement Award during Homecoming Weekend for his work as a clinician, researcher, educator, and leader in the dental field. It’s the highest honor awarded by the Alumni Association and the college.

After graduating from Cornell in 1976 with a degree in biology, Swift earned his dental degree from the University of Iowa and completed his training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Oklahoma. He then built a career that earned Swift international recognition as a clinician, researcher, educator, and leader in his profession.

For 25 years, he served as director of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, and twice led the university’s Advanced Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Swift continues to combine teaching with an active clinical practice.

His research has had an equally significant impact. With more than 100 publications, his work examining inflammatory mediators, pain, and pain management has contributed meaningfully to our understanding of oral health and patient care. He has also advocated for greater access to oral health care, a more diverse dental workforce, and the resources necessary to meet the nation’s future health care needs.

Swift has served as president and director of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and president of the American Dental Education Association. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons dedicated its 2024 annual meeting in your name, their highest professional honor.

He participated in surgical mission trips, supported dental education and research, advocated for students and patients, and helped provide opportunities for young people in his community. That same spirit of service brought Swift back to Cornell, where he shared his experience with students in the pre-health program and, most recently, accepted the opportunity to serve as a member of the Cornell Board of Trustees.
