BACO hosts events for Black History Month 2026

Cornell’s Black Awareness Cultural Organization (BACO) is planning events and raising awareness about Black History Month throughout February.

“Everyone is welcome to participate, reflect, and celebrate together,” said BACO President Brieauna Perch ’26. “Come build community, amplify black voices, and make history with us.”

Front (L to R): Shevancia Gillard '28, Sirius Barnett '28, Tashiaunna McGhee '27, Janiyah Robinson '27, and Brieauna Perch '26

BACO is also excited to share its newest social media campaign. Public Relations Chair Sirius Barnett ’28 says the group is featuring information on Black History each day via a trivia challenge on their Instagram. Winners will be featured on the BACO story each week, and there may be prizes at the end of the month. You can find and follow BACO on Instagram @baco_cornellcollege to see all that’s happening.

BACO’s Black History Month events are free and open to the public.

Feb. 1: BACO presents Soul Night at Super Skate, 6 p.m.

BACO kicked off the celebrations at Super Skate in Cedar Rapids with an unforgettable celebration of black culture, history, and joy. Whether attendees were smooth skaters or just finding their balance, this night was all about freedom, movement, and celebrating together.

Feb. 19: Ask a POC Panel, 5–7 p.m. in Smith Dining Room, Thomas Commons

This year BACO will spotlight a panel of Cornell professors, staff, and students bringing powerful insights, lived experiences, and deep knowledge to the conversation. BACO encourages everyone to show up with an open mind, ready to listen closely and expand their understanding of experiences surrounding cultural and social issues. This is an interactive and welcoming conversation that matters, with space to ask respectful, meaningful questions, and engage in real dialogue during dinner.

Feb. 28: Movie night at the Bijou, 4:30 p.m. (doors open at 4:15 p.m.)

In collaboration with Kelli Kennon-Lane, owner of the Mount Vernon Theatre Bijou, BACO, and ISA will end Black History Month with a free film celebrating black excellence. Concessions are available for purchase.
