The Cornell College Peter Paul Luce Gallery will present “In the end, I just miss the before” by Mount Vernon-based artist and Cornell Lecturer of Studio Art Stevie Haley Delgado from Oct. 24 to Dec. 7.
In their work, Delgado builds transitory worlds through papier-mâché sculpture, constructed cardboard spaces, and the interplay of light and shadow. By creating these atmospheric environments, Delgado invites exploration, curiosity, and reflection. Their work explores the complexity of childhood wonder when muddled with grief, tragedy, and a decaying sense of self. Central to Delgado’s practice are echoes of their lived experiences, particularly the fleeting nature of young queer relationships and the tragedy that can often surround them.
Delgado joined the faculty in the Department of Art and Art History at Cornell College in 2023. They teach courses in sculpture, graphic design, and illustration. They graduated from the University of Iowa with a Master of Fine Arts in 2024. They have worked as an educational assistant at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and have received the Digital Scholarship & Publishing Studio Summer Fellowship from the University of Iowa. They have also studied woodcarving at the Geisler-Moroder Woodcarving School in Elbigenalp, Austria, as a part of the L.A. “Tadd” Jensen Sculpture Study Scholarship.
Delgado will discuss their work at an Artist Lecture on Friday, Oct. 24, at 3:30 p.m. in McWethy Hall’s Room 222. Following the lecture, a reception for “In the end, I just miss the before” will take place in the Luce Gallery from 4 to 6 p.m. Both the lecture and reception are free and open to the public.
Luce Gallery, located in McWethy Hall on Cornell’s campus, is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free.
