Cornell Summer Research Institute starts May 19

Cornell College students and faculty will collaborate on nearly two dozen research projects during the annual Cornell Summer Research Institute (CSRI), which runs May 19–July 11.

Forty-four students will work with 20 faculty members to study several liberal arts topics and share their findings at the end of the eight-week institute.

“The Cornell Summer Research Institute provides students with essential experiential learning opportunities,” said CSRI Director and Assistant Professor of Statistics Tyler George. “Students and faculty collaborate on valuable research within the arts, sciences, and society, addressing real-world problems and driving innovation.”

This year’s topics include:

  • • The long-term macroeconomic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic
  • • Using genome editing to investigate the role of enhancer regions implicated in psychiatric disease
  • • Inorganic materials for energy applications
  • • Texts for beginning readers: Imagining Ancient Olympia and Visual Latin Reading Library
  • • Insect biodiversity in restored and remnant prairie fragments
  • • Biomechanical analysis of sport or gait
  •
  • Students and faculty will gather to kick off CSRI at a picnic on Thursday, May 22, where they will introduce their research projects. At the end of the institute, the public is invited to see students present their findings at a symposium on July 9 and 10 in the Thomas Commons, Hall-Perrine Room, from 3–5:15 p.m.
  •
  • Participants attend panels and discussions throughout the institute to help prepare them for life after college. Topics include applying for graduate school, marketing their skills, and learning about research ethics.

The institute is supported by generous funding from:

  • • Rogers-Gillette Fund for Student-Faculty Research
  • • Hendriks Experiential Learning Fund for Environmental Studies
  • Barbara A. Bopp '65 Experiential Learning Fund
  • • Richard G. Kessel Biological Sciences Scholarship
