You Said: Fall 2024
Well Said
“The place we share with our families and loved ones will always have the biggest space in our hearts, but now that you are at Cornell, your heart will expand and the Hilltop will become your second home.”
Wendy Beckemeyer, Vice President for Enrollment Management, at New Student Orientation Convocation
One Course offers global benefits
I enjoyed your spring edition cover-to-cover. As a former Peace Corps volunteer and longtime expatriate living in Europe, I gravitate to things international. But in this case, your coverage of eight alumni living abroad demonstrated how Cornell’s One Course At A Time played so perfectly into anyone wanting to pursue education or employment internationally.
I recall our son, Don Utroska Jr. ’92, studying Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon for three weeks, living in the area where the Bard roamed and wrote. What could be more stimulating than that educational experience? In his career following that, he has worked in London, Paris, and Geneva.
Another example is a Cornell student who came to live with us for about a month and work in the company I was running in Geneva, Switzerland. It was a great motivator for him to pursue an international career, and could only happen with the flexible academic system we have at Cornell College.
Thanks for exploring this facet of Cornell’s One Course system and how it opens so many doors to Cornellians who might want to deviate from the beaten path in their search for a satisfying career.

Report brings campus to life
Your Cornell Report is always over the top, and the spring 2024 edition was no different. Nancy [Kleihauer Adams ’64] and I both look forward to it arriving, and then devour it. This time, while the whole package was great, I particularly enjoyed learning about the Posse impact. Nice. So, continue to produce these excellent updates on Hilltop happenings. While being involved with Cornell’s Board provides important information on the overall day-to-day workings of the college, your Cornell Report brings it to life and shows the excitement that constantly takes place across the campus. Keep it up.

Kat Fay ’02: This is so awesome! So happy to see Professor Carlson living and continuing to learn new things. I like updates on retired professors. They inspired us on campus and still inspire us today. The best of the best!
Amy Moenning Boland ’08: My first block at Cornell was [Alfrieta Monagan’s] intro Anthropology course–I think about it often!
Kevin W. Johnson ’87: Dr. Allin, you were a wonderful professor, and I always appreciated your honest candor in and out of the classroom. Long may you ride!!!
Ellen Backus ’06: I loved reading about Professor Monagan in the Cornell Report! Traveling to the Caribbean with her (twice) were some of my best Cornell experiences. I had her for my very first block and was determined to take as many of her classes as I possibly could!
