Chicago Brass Quintet brings virtuosity to Mount Vernon

The virtuoso Chicago Brass Quintet will perform a free public concert as part of the Cornell Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27. As Cornell continues to repair King Chapel from derecho damage, this concert will be hosted two blocks east of campus at the First Presbyterian Church, 301 First St. NW in Mount Vernon.

The Chicago Brass Quintet

The concert, sponsored by Cornell College, features a program of both classical and popular styles of music dating from the Renaissance to the 20th century.  The first half of the concert will feature music of Claudio Monteverdi, Samuel Scheidt, Michael Kamen, and Eric Ewazen, while the latter half of the concert will present music of Latin American and Spanish origins with works by Ary Barroso, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Ignacio Calvo, Astor Piazzolla, and Dan Anderson.  Audience members may recognize tunes such as “Girl from Ipanema” and “Oblivion.”

Chicago Brass Quintet has been at the forefront of brass chamber music since the group’s founding in 1963. Internationally regarded as master musicians, the quintet has been widely lauded for their interpretations and creative approach to arrangement and performance. The New York Times has hailed them as “One of the best brass quintets in the world.”

Originally founded in a Northwestern University dorm room, the quintet rose to national prominence with the release of their first recording and through a notable appearance at an International Trumpet Guild’s Conference. In the six decades since then the quintet has pushed the bounds of chamber orchestration and played to acclaim before audiences around the world.

Its current members are Ross Beacraft and Matthew Lee on trumpet, Sharon Jones on horn, Adam Moen on trombone, and Dan Anderson on tuba. They continue to engage with music lovers through an enriching calendar of concerts, workshops, and educational events.

Passionate and expressive, the quintet is committed to enriching audiences and to advancing the future of brass instrumentation.
