Stewart’s book featured in New York Times
Professor of History Catherine Stewart’s “Long Past Slavery: Representing Race in the Federal Writers’ Project,” was featured in the Sunday Book Review section of the Oct. 30 New York Times in an essay about African American folk tales and ghost stories collected by employees of the Federal Writers’ Project.
Stewart is working on her second book on race and domestic service during the New Deal. She recently presented a chapter at the Newberry Library’s Labor History Seminar.
Her article in the Journal of American History, “Household Accounts: Black Domestic Workers in Southern White Spaces During the Great Depression,” has just been selected for Teaching the JAH, a web-based series. Stewart will create a lesson plan for use by teachers. She hopes Cornell students in her Block 7 seminar Leisure in U.S. History will give it a trial run before it is published.
