Cornell Department of Theatre and Dance presents ‘Freedom Dances’

Comprised of new works developed by Cornell College faculty and student choreographers, “Freedom Dances” is the triumphant cherry on top of the 2021–22 season for the Department of Theatre and Dance.

This final show, featuring Cornell’s dance students, runs one weekend only, April 29-30 at 7:30 p.m. and May 1 at 2 p.m. in Armstrong Hall’s Black Box Theatre. Artist in Residence Eduard Forehand, who is directing the show, says “Freedom Dances” was inspired by the chaos happening in the world.

“It is an awareness piece drawing attention to the socio/political issues of the ’80s and how they are still prevalent today,” Forehand said. “I chose the ’80s era because it was a time of activism and change situated in an almost experimental time for fashion, music, and the arts. I hope this piece reflects those qualities through all our hard work.”

“Freedom Dances” is also a celebratory return to live dance on Cornell’s campus following online dance performances during the pandemic. The show will feature eight pieces with Forehand choreographing six numbers and students choreographing two. The dance pieces will be filled with contemporary movement and a dash of hip-hop. Students are designing all of the costumes.

“I think it is a relatable work for adults coming to see it,” Forehand said. “For children, the movement is non-stop and the ’80s costumes, music, and projections are sure to be wild.” 

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, students, and youth, and free for Cornell faculty, staff, and students with an ID. Coe College and Kirkwood Community College students are also free. For reservations email boxoffice@cornellcollege.edu after April 11. All ticket sales are cash only.
