High school students invited to register for One Course Summer Institute

Cornell College will once again welcome high school students for the One Course Summer Institute June 26–July 13.

“Now I’m a step ahead for when I actually do go into college,” said Cecilia Hernandez, who participated in the 2021 session of the One Course Summer Institute.

High school students who will be rising juniors, seniors, or recent graduates during the summer of 2022 can sign up for any one of seven courses

  • 18 Days Later: Zombies, Brains, and Basic Neuroscience (Psychology)
  • Chemistry and the Kitchen: Should We Be Wearing Goggles??? (Chemistry)
  • Creative Writing: Sparking Creativity for College (Creative Writing)
  • DIY Genetic Engineering (Biology)
  • Experimental Drawing: Making a Mark (Studio Art)
  • Solving Big Problems with Data Systems (Computer Science)
  • Thinking with Things (Interdisciplinary)

Once they’ve completed the One Course Summer Institute, they’ll receive three credit hours that can be applied toward a Cornell College degree or used toward a degree at another college.

Students have the option to stay in the Cornell College residence halls and all meals will be prepared and served by Bon Appétit, our award-winning food service provider that focuses on fresh, nutritious ingredients, and a made-from-scratch approach.

“It (One Course Summer Institute) gets you used to life in a dorm. It gets you used to the responsibility of a college course,” said Justin Ringold, a 2021 participant and current first-year student at Cornell.  “You get to know a bit more about college life because of the activities that you end up doing.”

Organizers plan events each year for students to enjoy that introduce them to the local community. In the past, participants have attended a Minor League baseball game, visited local shops, taken trips to Iowa City, jumped around at a nearby trampoline park, and much more.
