Cornell College’s summer 2021 Cornell Report magazine is a winner in the Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion category of the inaugural Anthem Awards. The competition received nearly 2,500 entries from 36 countries.

The Anthem Awards was launched to amplify the voices that spark global change. Among the inaugural DEI winners are Google, HBO Max, Al Jazeera Digital, BBC, National Geographic, WarnerMedia, Planned Parenthood, Netflix, ViacomCBS, Sesame Workshop, Malala Fund, and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.

The “I See You” issue of the Cornell Report magazine won a silver award. It is part of Cornell College’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, with Heather ‘Byrd’ Roberts ’09 as guest editor and subject matter expert. See Roberts deliver her six-word call-to-action acceptance speech:

Anthem Awards graphicHer goal was to see and hear alumni of color and give them an official college platform to talk to fellow alumni and current students. Roberts engaged 19 alumni of color in the issue.

The process involved conversations with leadership about what to include and why, resulting in institutional growth. Magazine staff plans to create stories now and in the future that are more diverse, more equitable, and more inclusive. Other major contributors to the issue were Editor Dee Ann Rexroat ’82, Assistant Editor Lisa Gray Giurato, Senior Diversity Officer and Director of Intercultural Life Hemie Collier, and Amy Belice Graphic Design.

Winners for the inaugural Anthem Awards will be celebrated at the first annual Anthem Voices conference followed by a star-studded virtual awards show on Monday, Feb. 28.
