The Cornell College Intercultural Life Office (ICL) has events planned for MLK week, starting with Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17, and lasting through Friday, Jan. 21.
ICL’s theme for MLK Week is Radical Compassion, which has also been ICL’s theme for the year. The goal is for everyone to continuously focus on not simply having compassion for others and ourselves, but being radical and audacious in understanding the who, what, when, where, how, and why of our compassion.
Please note that masks will be required for all events.
Monday, Jan. 17
Join the Cornell College Office of Civic Engagement and ICL in commemorating the life and legacy of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through advocacy and service. Due to COVID-19, students are encouraged to give back individually instead of gathering together to do so. Here are a few options from the Civic Engagement Office:
Join ICL and the Office of Spiritual Life for a vigil led by The Rev. Melea White.
Join ICL and place that which you would dream for our country and our world on the board. This board will be available both in the Thomas Commons lobby and virtually on their social media channels. This is open to the Cornell College community and the greater community.
Join ICL for a movie night at the local Bijou Movie Theater. The event will feature a civil rights-focused film, and there will be unlimited popcorn and soda. This event is open to both the Cornell College community and the greater local community. Please email interculutral_life@cornellcollege.edu to RSVP as space is limited.
The ICL team invites you to join them the second week of each block over the lunch hour for a drop-in, student and Cornell community-driven dialogue about various topics of culture, diversity, and inclusion.
Join ICL on the OC for a community art project. Participants will be painting individual canvases with various quotes from the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that will be used to create a greater collaged mural. This event is open to the Cornell College community and the greater local community.
Join ICL and friends this Thursday and each Thursday of the block for a virtual discussion of current events and important topics. This week’s chat will focus on The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Cornell’s MLK Week theme of radical compassion.
Join ICL in this self-directed walk-though symposium on the impact that MLK has had on various cultures across the U.S. and the world. This event is open to the Cornell College community and the greater local community.
Join ICL and friends for songs, dances, and other celebrations of Juneteenth. This event is open to the Cornell College community and the greater local community.
Join ICL at Stoner House for a discussion about soul food and grab a plate of your own food-to-go following the conversation. This event focuses on the importance of food, specifically soul food, in bringing together communities and conversations. This event is open to Cornell College and the greater local community. Please RSVP by Wed. Jan. 19.
