Foreword from the president

I am extremely thankful for the passion and spirit that Heather ‘Byrd’ Roberts ’09 has devoted to this issue, which makes progress possible.

Jonathan Brand writes foreword on institutional racism Though this issue of the Cornell Report may cause some of us discomfort, its goal is to raise awareness and advance the conversation with the most powerful information we have—the honest and heartfelt perspectives of Cornellians. Through their lenses, we understand the causes and effects of racism. And, starting at home is the most obvious first step.

I was admittedly hesitant about people’s readiness for this issue of the Cornell Report, even as I have been engaged in learning more fully about racism and creating room for these conversations across campus and with the Board of Trustees. Yet, it is clear that the time is right to have these discussions, and that we need to recognize and support the voices of our Cornell family. I am thankful to all of them for sharing their contributions to this issue. I see you.

Please join me in listening.
