Remembrance event covered by local media
Cornell College participated in a nationwide event to commemorate those who have died in the pandemic.
On Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 4:30 p.m. the Rev. Catherine Quehl-Engel, the college chaplain, rang the bell on top of College Hall. She rang it a symbolic number of times to represent the number of people who have died from COVID-19 in the U.S.
The moment was presented in a story, “Cornell College hosts event remembering those who died from COVID-19,” by KGAN, Iowa’s News Now, on Jan. 19, 2021.
The Rev. Catherine Quehl-Engel told KGAN, “This is a way for us to unify. To move beyond the partisan politics and remember who we are as people who care about each other.”
The U.S. Presidential Inaugural Committee held a lighting event prior to the Inauguration at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and invited communities around the country to light up buildings and ring church bells as a national moment of remembrance.
