Eddie Moore ’89: Leadership & Service Award citation & response
Eddie Moore ’89, today we honor you for your work as a diversity consultant, community leader, scholar, author and activist. This award is very timely, coming when the country is undergoing a deep introspection into its attitudes on race, society and human relationships, issues you have addressed throughout your career.
You came from Punta Gorda, Florida, to Cornell where you were a three-sport letter winner for the Rams, while majoring in politics and working in the dining service. You earned a master’s degree in education administration from Loras College, where you also coached football and served as a resident hall director, and then a doctorate in education policy and leadership from the University of Iowa.
While pursuing your doctorate, you returned to the Hilltop to serve as assistant dean of students and director of intercultural life. Your work laid the foundation for that office today, which has expanded in size in scope. You should feel very proud of your legacy here.
In 1996, you founded your business, America & MOORE, which provides consulting, research, planning, and direction for clients in government, academia and business. In 1999 you founded the White Privilege Conference, which has encouraged and facilitated discussion about some of the toughest subjects facing this country.
You are the author of two books and numerous chapters in other books. You have convened numerous conferences and seminars devoted to bridging our racial gaps. You have produced videos used in training across many platforms for many audiences. Today, you are one of the country’s most sought-after experts on topics of race and social justice at a time when those issues have seared themselves into our nation’s psyche. Your experience and wisdom is being called forth as never before.
We are proud to present you with the 2020 Leadership and Service Award.
