Sean Thomas ’96: Staff making their own masks in Phoenix

As an emergency room patient care technician in north central Phoenix, Arizona, Sean Thomas ’96 says he’s used to seeing the sickest of the sick as well as the most critically injured.

But helping patients during a pandemic is all new to him, including the dwindling supplies.

This is the first of a series of stories on Cornellians responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We started out with what we thought was a plentiful supply of masks, visors, gowns, and gloves, but we’re now starting to see shortages, especially in the mask and visor supplies,” he shared by email March 23. “We’ve now got staff making their own masks, so they know that at least they’ll have some level of protection for themselves.

“At this time, my family and I are all well, and I’ve not had any confirmed exposure yet. As much as I hope to keep it that way, I wouldn’t be willing to put any money on that.”
