“Cornell must and does value free speech, and also the need to counter wrongful speech with more speech, in a civil and respectful manner. Stand up for your values, but as a part of a community that respects every person and communicates with a desire to understand and learn and not to denigrate others.” — Cornell Trustee John McGrane ’73, Opening Convocation speaker

My favorite college that I didn’t attend! But my son is there now so it’s a vicarious experience.

Worked for me! I came in on the Pell and a generous scholarship and left middle class. Thank you Cornell.

Just had five hours worth of meetings with my thesis advisor. Intellectually stimulating conversations regarding a topic I am truly passionate about. @CornellCollege is amazing. I still can’t believe that I get the opportunity to collaborate with such amazing professors 1 on 1

Prof. Lucas and Prof. Savitsky—they both had great passion and storytelling abilities that inspired you to dig in to what they were teaching. Honorable mention to Prof. Stewart who was super tough, but it made her classes some of the most rewarding. Also, let’s take a second to recognize Prof. Molleur for being the best human I’ve ever met.

Professor Catherine Stewart and Professor Kate Kauper! I always consider myself lucky to have had two of the most astounding, incredible, hardworking, successful, and dedicated people in the world as my advisors! Two years out of college and they still go above and beyond to push me and help me reach my own incredible accomplishments!

Dr. Melinda Green—as a professor, advisor, and principal investigator, Dr. Green’s passion for psychology and excellent work ethic were the highlights of my time at Cornell.

On a bus during my study abroad in Rome, I met a woman from one of the Carolinas whose uncle went to Cornell. Talk about a small world.

What a time to be alive.
Proof of Cornell’s social mobility
I heard of Cornell’s new national rankings on my car radio and then through my son, Don Utroska Jr. ’92, I heard the full story. I was especially touched by the fact that Cornell College is ranked No. 1 in social mobility. I think your Cornell Report story on those of us who were “First” in college and my opportunity from a low-income home to attend Cornell has come full circle for me with this recognition. It is exciting news and makes me feel very proud of Cornell and being a Cornellian.

Recognizing 2 strong women
The latest issue of the Cornell Report held special meaning for me. On pages 54 and 55 stand the death notices of two women with whom I was acquainted: Vivian Heywood and Gusti Kollman. One thing I took with me from Cornell College was the model of strong, achieving, humanitarian womanhood they provided.
You do justice to Mrs. Heywood but not to Mrs. Kollman. I am not apprised of all the details, but I do know that in the case of the latter, there is much more to be said. Your two little lines do not suffice.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Both women contributed greatly to the Cornell community. While we wish we could write about every Cornellian’s life at the time of death, that’s not possible. We feature alumni with national impact in their field, former faculty (such as Professor Emeritus Heywood), prominent staff members, and trustees.
