Vanessa Bayer to perform Jan. 25
Get ready to laugh away the winter blues with Cornell College’s Big Event 2019, as the campus community welcomes comedian Vanessa Bayer.
Bayer will perform in King Chapel at 7 p.m. on Jan. 25, 2019. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Vanessa is an actress and comedian who holds the record as the longest-serving female cast member on Saturday Night Live from 2010–2017, which earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. She has also appeared in the movies including “Trainwreck,” “Office Christmas Party,” and “Ibiza.”
The event is free for Cornell students, faculty, and staff with their Cornell ID. Admission is available to the public at the door for $10.
The annual Big Event is funded by a donation from alumnus Richard Williams ’63 and his wife, Marlene. The Williams Fund has been established to bring special events to campus which will stimulate students and enliven the Cornell community. Student Senate co-sponsors the event.
“The Big Event was designed to give the students something fun and exciting to do during the cold months,” said Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Life Angie Bauman Power. “The donor, who provides funds for The Big Event, wants Cornell students to experience a larger, social event to keep them motivated and entertained during the winter.”
A team of college leaders and students collaborate to organize the event, including Student Senate, Performing Arts and Activities Council (PAAC), Greek Council, and KRNL. Several additional students volunteer during the event to ensure everything runs smoothly.
“The Big Event is a really exciting time at Cornell and makes us stand out as a liberal arts school in Iowa,” said PAAC’s Jessica Meis ’19. “Some students travel to bigger cities like Chicago, Minneapolis, or Des Moines for shows or concerts, but the Big Event brings those fun things to campus, for free. It gives the opportunity to students who don’t have the budget or means of transportation to experience popular live music or concerts.”
2017’s Big Event featured national recording artist Daya, and during the winter of 2018, Indie pop band AJR performed for the crowd.
The 2019 Big Event is open to the Cornell community and the public. Advance tickets for the public will not be available. For more information contact abaumanpower@cornellcollege.edu.
