Strong receives grant for 3D printer

William Deskin Professor of Chemistry Cindy Strong has received a joint grant with chemists at Lake Forest College and Luther College for a new high-resolution resin 3D printer at each campus, which will be used to create detailed molecular models.

The Associated Colleges of the Midwest’s (ACM) Faculty Career Enhancement Program (FaCE) is providing the grant funding.

“The resin printer will produce stronger and more detailed models than the college’s current 3D printers,” Strong said. “Resin printers also produce models that are smoother and are more durable for handling. We’ve talked with people in other departments, including art and theatre, and they are excited about the possibilities for making art and props.”

The new printer will be housed in the Academic Technology Studio of Cole Library and will be a resource for other departments and groups on campus.

Strong expects the new printer to be ready for use by the end of the spring semester.
