Integrating the soccer team
How exciting to read the article about women playing on the men’s soccer team in the fall Report. I was one of those women.
As well as playing in the Coe game, I remember making the traveling squad against Monmouth and having to find a place to change into my uniform. When I reminisce about my college experience, it is always about Cornell (though I transferred my junior year) and that time I stayed on the field when the ref asked the women to leave! Shoe Tree origin
There's a little-known history of the Shoe Tree (“25 Things That Make Mount Vernon Cool”), but a Swiss exchange student and I began it perhaps 17 years ago. I had seen one in the desert near Fallon, Nevada, on U.S. 50, thought Mount Vernon needed one, so we threw the first shoes into it. The tree on Bryant Road (also known as Mud Road) was similar to that tree I saw in the Nevada desert, just standing alone in the wilderness. So it seemed a fitting opportunity to bring that energy to Iowa.
