Giselle Nguyen wins New York piano competition prize
Cornell College pianist Huong “Giselle” Nguyen ’20 won the prize for Best Performance of the National Heritage Selection as a finalist in the 2018 New York Piano Festival and Competition on June 24.
The prize recognized her performance of “Trong Com” by Vietnamese composer Dang Huu Phuc. Nguyen, from Hanoi, Vietnam, majors in piano performance at Cornell and studies piano with Professor of Music and L.L. Hamline Professor of Liberal Arts James Martin.
“Giselle is a terrific pianist. She understands how to play in phrases, she is very lyrical, and she has a strong sense of the power of drama in music and uses her virtuosity to convey it at a very high level,” Martin said. “To say that she is a delight to teach would be an understatement. She has a true joy for both making music and learning about music.”
