Nadel, a double major in archaeology and chemistry double major from Houston, Texas, is one of 281 students to receive the national recognition.

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency established in 1986. The Scholarship Program honoring Senator Barry Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.

College representatives nominate students for the scholarship competition and students submit an essay. Nadel’s essay described her research from the 2017 Cornell Summer Research Institute with Professor of Chemistry Cindy Strong.

During the research the two examined pottery shards from a site in South Dakota, using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry to explore the chemical composition of each piece.

Nadel also recently won the undergraduate poster competition for her research poster presentation on the same topic at the 75th annual Plains Anthropological Conference in Bismarck, North Dakota.
