Baritone, pianist provide guest recital Oct. 30

Cornell College will host a guest recital by baritone Andrew D. Whitfield and pianist Nicholas Shaneyfelt, Luther College faculty, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, in the Ringer Recital Studio, Armstrong Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

Their program includes “Cigánské melodie,” Op. 55, by Dvořák, “Tutto è disposto … Aprite un po’ quegli occhi” from “Le Nozze di Figaro” by Mozart, “Chansons de Don Quichotte” by Ibert, and “Let Us Garlands Bring,” Op. 18, by Finzi. Andrew Whitfield Whitfield is an associate professor of music and coordinator of opera at Luther. In addition to appearances with the Des Moines Metro Opera, Opera Southwest, and Pensacola Opera, Whitfield was a resident artist with Portland Opera Works and toured with Opera Kansas and Opera Birmingham. He performed as the baritone soloist in the world premier of Mohammed Fairouz's “Anything Can Happen” with the Grinnell College Singers. He has presented Schubert's “Winterreise” numerous times in recital in Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado, and Texas. He is also a co-founder and co-director of the International Music Festival of the Adriatic, a summer chamber music festival for piano, strings, voice, and composition in Duino, Italy. Nicholas Shaneyfelt Shaneyfelt is a visiting assistant professor of music in collaborative piano at Luther. He has accompanied regional honor choirs and choral societies in Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Maine. He is on the faculty of the International Music Festival of the Adriatic, and is music director at Belvoir Terrace in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. While an undergraduate at Notre Dame, he was the winner of the university’s concerto competition. His piano trio, The Nora Trio, was the first Notre Dame chamber ensemble to be selected as a finalist in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Notable recent performances include engagements in Los Angeles, New York City, and the Kennedy Center through the University of Michigan’s Gershwin Initiative, and “Winterreise” with tenor William Hite. He tours frequently with mezzo-soprano Katherine Calcamuggio Donner through the Piatigorsky Foundation.
