Harold’s History of Cole Bin 1, Cole Bin 2, and George’s

The quest to untangle the history of these three places started with a picture of what was identified as the interior of the Cole Bin in the fall 2015 Cornell Report. I knew it wasn’t of the Cole Bin, but it had to be of George’s. I started searching through the Royal Purples, but many questions were left unanswered. When I started searching through digital copies of The Cornellian, the timing of events and relationships became much clearer.

Cole Bin 2 (1947-57)
Cole Bin 2 (1947-57)

In summary, there were two Cole Bins. The first opened in September 1945 and closed in 1947 when the second opened on Oct. 10, 1947. George and Alice Brown managed Cole Bin 1 for its two years. Cole Bin 2 they managed for its first two years, when in the fall of 1949 the college hired a Mrs. Austin to manage the Cole Bin. In September 1949 George opened his own place off campus. George’s burned to the ground in April 1950 but was immediately rebuilt, and he continued to operate until March of 1953 when he had to shut it down.

From the articles in The Cornellian, it sounds like his policy of allowing students to run charge accounts became at least part of the problem in keeping George’s viable.

The case for The Kissing Rock
Shortly before her death in March, I added a post to our CaringBridge site for Nancy (Krause Gale ’74) about how Jerry met Nancy at Cornell College. I mentioned in the article that our first kiss was on the rock at Ink Pond. We recreated the kiss when we were back for our 40th reunion. I recently received a nice card from Gail Parker Mehlan ’74 who said she and Douglas Mehlan ’72 had their first kiss at the same place. It got me wondering if kissing on the rock at Ink Pond is a common occurrence at Cornell. If not, it should be. Maybe we can mount a campaign to rename the Ink Pond rock The Kissing Rock to encourage more Cornell College romances.

The @cornellcollege Report does a very good job of stoking nostalgia.

Cornell College not only provided me with opportunities to explore academically, compete athletically, and grow personally … it gave me some of the BEST people I have in my life today.

Almost everything I learned about politics, I learned from Allin, Sutherland, Loebsack, and Student Senate. Congrats to these two [Allin and Sutherland, in retirement] for setting the standard of bipartisanship.
