After working in their personal art studios in McWethy Hall throughout the year, Cornell College’s senior studio art majors will reveal their work with art openings Sunday, April 30, from 2-4 p.m. in Peter Paul Luce Gallery and in the Thomas Commons. All Cornell senior studio art majors receive their own studio spaces and prepare exhibitions consisting of entirely fresh bodies of work in the mediums of their choice. They propose their exhibitions before the department faculty, mount the exhibitions, and advertise and defend their shows in front of the art and art history professors.
Annie Seng, Gio Rivera, Jamie Marylyn Prouty, and Jose Antonio Reyes will present “The Show” in Peter Paul Luce Gallery at McWethy Hall. Brendan Higgins will show his work in the front lounge of the Thomas Commons.
Jamie Marylyn Prouty uses clay in her exhibit “Not Your Vessel, Bitch.” “This show is a tribute to women everywhere, and their relationships with their bodies. When people offer their thoughts and opinions about our physical appearance, even the smallest comment can profoundly affect the way we view ourselves, both positively and negatively,” she said. “This work is meant to bring attention to the impact of language while also celebrating the strength and beauty of women.”
Jose Antonio Reyes presents “Through My Eyes” with photography and acrylic on canvas. He describes his exhibit is “a series of photography looking at three different cities from a different perspective, which is explored in depth through the paintings.”
Gio Rivera uses print for his show, “Inadequacy, Introspection, Reclamation.” He described his work as “an introspective look at the misery I faced having my passion become my job and how I dug myself out of depression.”
Annie Seng presents “The Anthropocene,” an installation using various materials, Elmer’s and wood glue. She said the piece is “about my struggles with creating sense out of the senseless and my interactions with everyday objects and materials.”
Brendan Higgins is exhibiting “infinity minus one” in the Thomas Commons. He describes his show as an investigation of and homage to natural and mechanical systems.
The annual senior thesis art exhibits remain on display through May 12. McWethy gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays and 2-4 Sundays. Thomas Commons hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 8 a.m. to midnight Friday-Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
