New music, folk music, Radiohead: The string quintet Sybarite5 will play it all at their upcoming Music Mondays concert at Cornell College.
Sybarite5 performs the final 2016-17 Music Mondays concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 10, in Cornell College’s King Chapel. Admission is free to the public.
The ensemble will perform its “Outliers” program, based on its upcoming album of the same name that features all new works commissioned from American composers. The Outliers concert series is a celebration of works written by the quintet’s favorite composers paired with the group’s favorite works of Armenian folk music, Piazzolla, Elgar, and Radiohead. “What I love about Sybarite5 is our ability to cross boundaries and discover new sounds,” said Louis Levitt, the group’s bassist.
Sybarite5 features Sami Merdinian and Sarah Whitney on violin, Angela Pickett on viola, Laura Metcalf on cello, and Levitt on bass. They’ve made an impact in the music industry by commissioning over 50 pieces for string quintet and modeling a modern approach to the profession—including their Forward Festival, the world’s first portable chamber music festival. Last fall they served as the resident ensemble for the American Composers Forum National Competition in New York City.
Their classical training, entrepreneurship, and choice of repertoire combined to inspire a reporter at the Arizona Daily Star to proclaim that Sybarite5 audiences should “expect an experience that will satisfy your inner rock star and your secret Mozart.”
