Center for Law & Society: Where are they now?
Since its establishment in 2005 the Center for Law and Society has had an impressive track record of placing students in law schools and fields related to law. Below is a list of many of those former students, including some who found success in other fields.
Kristie DePena ’06 received a law degree from the University of Iowa and a Master of Law (LLM) degree in national security and foreign policy from the George Washington Law School. She now works as policy counsel at the Niskanen Center in Washington, D.C.
Nathan Johnson ’06 earned his law degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and now practices law in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Brian McKenrick ’06 earned his master’s degree in legal administration at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and is now assistant district court administrator for the Seventh Judicial District of Iowa in Davenport, Iowa.
Michelle Knowland Nelson ’06 works as management services coordinator at the Community and Economic Development Bureau in Savannah, Georgia.
Britta Nord ’06 is senior contracts administrator for ALPS Distributors in Denver, Colorado.
Douglas Dorando ’07 received his law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law and is now employed as a city attorney in Keokuk, Iowa.
Kristin Krile ’07 is executive director of the Rural Enrichment & Counseling Headquarters in Hawley, Minnesota.
Alena Vazquez ’07 received her law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law. She works as a policy analyst at the Human Services Research Institute in Portland, Oregon.
Katherine Sullivan ’08 is director of human resources at Moab Regional Hospital in Moab, Utah.
Leslie Tweeton Behaunek ’09 earned her law degree at Drake University and now works as an associate attorney with Nyemaster Goode, PC in Des Moines, Iowa.
Michael McGehee ’09 is instructor of philosophy and band director at Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting, Indiana.
A former Fulbright Scholar in the Republic of Georgia, Nic Wondra ’09 is program analyst and desk officer for Eastern Europe, Russia, Eurasia, and China at the Office of Nuclear Energy, U.S. Department of Energy, in Washington, D.C.
Liz Bennett ’10 is a state representative from Iowa House District 65 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Alexandra Kitson ’10 earned her law degree at Cornell University in 2014.
Priyanth Manjooran ’10 earned a law degree from Drake University and works as an attorney with Transamerica in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Quinlan Purkey ’10 received his law degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and is a staff attorney and senior real estate specialist at University Research Park, Inc. in Madison, Wisconsin.
Matthew Shimanovsky ’10 received his law degree from Drake University. He now serves as assistant public defender for the State Public Defender in Iowa City, Iowa.
Eli Wade-Scott ’10 earned his law degree at Harvard University. He is now a Skadden Fellow and attorney at LAF (formerly Legal Assistance Foundation) in Chicago, Illinois.

Lisa Chen ’12 is assistant principal at the Success Academy Charter Network in New York City, New York.
Brandon Crawford ’12 attends medical school at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Kalissa Holdcraft ’13 graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in May 2016. During law school, she served as an assistant coach for the Cornell College mock trial team, and serves as a Cornell Young Trustee. She will work with nonprofit organizations in Omaha, Nebraska.

Melissa Mannon ’13 received her Master of Science degree in Legal Administration from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. She is now a research consultant at The Lewin Group in Falls Church, Virginia.
