Relay For Life set for April 16
Students and community members are invited to get involved with the fight against cancer by participating in Relay For Life at Cornell College. It takes place on Saturday, April 16, from 4-10 p.m. in the Rich and Norma Small Multi-Sport Center arena.
Team members are encouraged to walk around the track, but the event will also include games, food, and entertainment. The fundraiser is held in many places across the United States, and allows groups to create teams and set fundraising goals.
All of the funds will get donated to the American Cancer Society for cancer research.
The goal is not only to raise money, but to raise awareness about the research, to show how the community is fighting back, and to give survivors and families a chance to celebrate.
“Both personally and in this position, I see the effects that cancer has on families and on loved ones,” said Cornell College Assistant Director for Civic Engagement Katie Wilson. “Because it can take so many forms, cancer touches just about all of our lives. I love what the American Cancer Society represents and their energy and passion for not only alleviating this horrible disease, but giving all affected a reason to celebrate life, birthdays, and hope. I have been proud to watch our students prepare for this Cornell tradition, and I hope it succeeds in these goals.”
Mauricio Huertas ’16 and Sabine Hahn ’18 are the students in charge of Relay For Life at Cornell.
This has been a long-running event at Cornell College. Faculty, staff, students, and community members are welcome to participate.
“Cornell and the Mount Vernon community have a true partnership in fighting the horrible disease, regardless of their personal ties,” Wilson said. “I love seeing the student body fight together for something so close to home. Additionally, I love the community response as we all join together to raise money for such a noble cause.”
People interested in the Cornell College Relay For Life can still sign up, and questions can be directed to Katie Wilson at Kwilson@cornellcollege.edu.
