The building, which houses 48 students in six suites, was renamed to honor the contributions of John Smith ’71 and his wife, Dyan Smith, an honorary alumna. The couple were among the leaders in supporting the recently completed residence halls renovation project.

At the dedication of the hall in September, Cornell President Jonathan Brand spoke about the long-standing support that the couple have shown for the college, which goes well beyond their most recent gift. John Smith, who is the board chairman of CRST International Inc., has provided distinguished service on the Cornell College Board of Trustees, including serving as chair from 2008 through 2011, and as chair of the Extraordinary Opportunities Campaign, which finished in 2010.

In addition to their commitment to Cornell College, the Smiths have made a philanthropic impact throughout Eastern Iowa, in areas ranging from health care to education to the arts.
