Nearly 90 percent will be first-year students, members of the class of 2019. The remaining 12 percent are transfer students from colleges and universities around the country. New Student Orientation, which helps students adjust to life on campus, runs from Wednesday, Aug. 26, through Sunday, Aug. 30. Classes for all students begin on Aug. 31, with returning students arriving on campus on Aug. 30. The summer of 2015 was busy around campus, with the college hosting its first Cornell Summer Research Institute. Thirty-six students spent 10 weeks on campus performing research with faculty members in disciplines ranging from art and biology to geology and music. In addition to their research, students had the opportunity to present their findings and took part in workshops to prepare them for graduate school, among other things. Work on the college's residence hall renovation project continued, with the final two residence halls, Dows and Tarr, being completed in the middle of August. The project, which took 14 months, renovated the four main first-year residence halls, and included re-finished and repaired rooms and new lounges and common areas with distinct themes, including performance and active gaming. The college also added banners along First Street, which complement the Ped Mall banners it added last summer.
