Farmer’s short story featured on Huffington Post
A short story by Laura Farmer, director of the writing studio at Cornell College, has been featured in the Huffington Post alongside short stories by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Joyce Carol Oates, and others as one of the “12 Weirdest Stories of Christmas.”
Farmer’s 2006 story, “Christmas Eve,” is a first-person account of returning home to small-town Iowa for Christmas as the speaker, Jancy, responds to the strange combination of what has changed and what has stayed the same. Between a rash and an ailing father, Jancy’s Christmas is far from ideal, and she calls on the comfort of her high school boyfriend, who brings her to a local dive featuring over-salted popcorn and a Susan Lucci holiday movie.
