“The Devil is in the Details: Can I Really Say God in School?”

On Jan 19th, Associate Professor of Education Jill Heinrich will give a lecture titled “The Devil is in the Details: Can I Really Say God in School?” This presentation will examine conflicts regarding the separation of church and state in our nation’s public schools. Through careful examination of the Establishment Clause as articulated in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, as well as influential court cases that have set legal precedent and thus driven educational policy, it examines what this “separation” mandate means when it comes to the inclusion of religion in the school sphere, including discussion of religious history, theory and practice in the curricular setting, and tolerance for religious exercise through such venues as school prayer or holiday celebrations.
