Events planned for Black History Month
Cornell College is hosting events throughout February in honor of Black History Month, including a screening and discussion of the new film “The Black Fatherhood Project.”
In that film, first-time filmmaker Jordan Thierry offers context and conversation in an exploration of fatherhood in black America. Through a telling of his own story and interviews with historians, he traces the roots of the fatherless black home and reveals a history much more complex and profound than is often told. Putting that history into perspective is a dialogue among fathers discussing their experiences, inspirations, and insight on how communities can come together to ensure the power of a father’s love is not lost on America’s black children.
The screening and discussion will take place at 6 p.m. on Feb. 15 in the Hedges Conference Room in the Thomas Commons on Cornell’s campus. It is co-sponsored by Diversity Focus.
Other events planned for the month include:
- Tasmania Clayburn, a motivational speaker who deals with HIV/AIDS at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 in Hedges Conference Room;
- David D. Robertson, and Adolescent & Young Adult Empowerment Speaker and Sex Education Specialist at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 8 in Hedges Conference Room;
- BACO presents: African Americans In The Arts at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 10 and 11 in King Chapel; and
- Bryant K. Smith speaking about “The Cooptation of the word “Nigger’” at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 22 in Hedges Conference Room.
