Senior art shows set for April

Five Cornell College senior studio art majors will be displaying their visual art thesis projects in the Peter Paul Luce Gallery from April 10th through April 20th, 2011.

The five students are Harry Blackwood, Leah Green, Kassi Smith, Emily White and Max Wilke .

Blackwood’s work consists of an interactive installation work with video, photography, and sculptural components. His work examines not only our consumption of technology, but also how that technology affects our interactions with each other.

Green’s work consists of prints, handspun wool and hair, and frottage. Frottage is an image making method involving rubbing over a textured surface. Most of Leah’s work makes reference to the history of its own making.

Smith’s work is made up of various whimsical, narrative, non-functional teapots with a touch of nostalgia. Various trinkets provide the starting point which Kassi uses to create something like teapots.

White is creating a series of highly sculptural garments in the color white using textiles and other materials. Emily is interested in the ways that people wear clothing and the meaning it has for us. Her work reflects her lifelong connection with sewing and the fiber arts as well as her passion for dresses.

Wilke’s work consists of oil on canvas paintings with bubble wrap and paper painted in metallic gray.  His work attempts to create a dialogue between Modernist period art and the Contemporary, by using key elements of Modernist painting in a Minimalist style, viewed from a contemporary perspective.

The exhibition opens on Sunday April 10th with a public reception from 2 to 4 pm.
