It may be based on lack of awareness, or even issues of privilege. Additionally, negative coverage on immigration fuels this confusion. Alejandro Piedras, director of multicultural and community outreach at Grand View University in Des Moines, has faced this dilemma since his arrival to the U.S. and continues to engage others about identity issues among members of the community.
