“Breaking Barriers Through Ending Ableism Oppression” presented by Katherine Betts

As we strive to foster campus environments that are inclusive and welcoming to diverse communities, we first must look at access. The level of comfort in which the campus community and visitors can access events, services, public spaces, and information send a message about diversity on our campus. This presentation on Nov 2nd is designed for student organization leaders, residential life staff, and university event planners to dialogue around access and its intersection with diversity. The dialogue will use practical ways of framing our thinking around ableism, and how it relates to other forms of oppression. In addition, the workshop will identify universal design standard practices that can easily be implemented. Universal design is a method of thinking of multiple audiences. Planning for audiences that are diverse in cultural background, size, and ability helps to make campus events welcoming and enjoyable for all.
