Dr. Larry Dorr ’63 in New York Times
Cornell trustee Dr. Lawrence Dorr ’63, a world leader in hip and joint replacement surgery and research, and who collaboratively conceived and supports Cornell’s Dimensions program, discovered a faulty metal hip implant used for thousands of patients.
After the manufacturer wasn’t responsive, Dorr, who was a paid consultant for the manufacturer, “sounded an alarm to colleagues in a professional association and soon heard back from doctors with similar experiences.”
“I saw one of Zimmer’s engineers at a meeting, and I told her that you should pull this cup because you are crippling patients,” Dorr told the New York Times.
Last week, Zimmer suspended sales of the device.
