Due to this natural disaster, President Garner has chosen to apply disaster pay for employees who are affected by the flooding.

This is a trying time and calls for compassion and understanding. Cornell College will reimburse employees up to 40 hours of working time for those not able to come to work due to direct impact of the flooding. For example, if roads were closed making travel unsafe or impossible, if you had no one to care for your children, if you’ve been evacuated, or your home has been or is in peril, then you qualify for being compensated.

How will Cornell determine employee compensation? We will rely on the honor system and let employees decide for themselves. Based on that honor system, tell your supervisor how many hours you worked during this timeframe. There will be many “unusual” situations. We trust you will discuss these in good faith with your supervisor and agree on a fair number of work hours for which you should be compensated. For those hours you feel you should not be compensated, you have three options: you can take the time as vacation/float time, as unpaid leave, or you can work with your supervisor to make up the time.

We ask your supervisor to e-mail Kay Schirm of any time off that should be paid as “disaster time.” If it is too late to reflect on the June paycheck, corrections will be made for July. President Garner will re-evaluate this situation at the end of next week.

Thank you for your response to the flood emergencies on campus and in the community. If you have questions, please be in touch with Vickie Farmer. Also please inform Vickie if there are ways that the college community can come to your assistance.
