Cornell hosts Relay for Life
MOUNT VERNON – The American Cancer Society’s 6th Annual Relay for Life at Cornell College begins with the opening ceremony at 8 p.m. Friday, May 16 in the Small Multi-Sport Center.
Students from Cornell and participants from the Mount Vernon-Lisbon community will walk or run around the indoor track at Cornell’s Small Multi-Sport Center until 8 a.m. Saturday, May 17. Money raised by 41 teams – 28 with Cornell students, 5 of Cornell faculty and staff, 4 from area schools, 4 from the community – and 31 business sponsors will help finance cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. The fundraising goal is $60,000.
Survivors will be honored Friday in a ceremony that includes a survivors’ lap, special speaker and luminaria ceremony, starting between 8:30 and 9 p.m. With the theme “One-Cure-At-A-Time,” a theme that plays off of Cornell’s dynamic One-Course-At-A-Time academic calendar, the 12-hour event will feature entertainment, games and educational materials focused on the different ways to help in the fight against cancer one step at a time.
