CEDAR RAPIDS – Cornell College received a Silver Award from Alliant Energy for energy efficiency in the construction of its new dormitory Clock Tower Hall at the first annual “Excellence in Energy-Efficient Construction Awards” ceremony.

The new residence hall sported an 18.8 percent electric savings and 27.1 percent natural gas saving. The design of the building reduced Cornell’s carbon dioxide emissions by 110 tons per year, or the equivalent of 20 cars or 14 homes.

“Clock Tower Hall is another step forward in Cornell’s efforts to reach its sustainability goals,” said Bill Miler, director of facilities management. “We’re pleased with our new dormitories and the environmentally friendly direction this project allowed us to take.”

Clock Tower Hall was designed by the Durrant Group and opened in the fall of 2007.
