Ben Frank Moss exhibits ‘Spirit States’
MOUNT VERNON — Seventy works on paper by internationally recognized American painter Ben Frank Moss will be exhibited at Cornell College’s Peter Paul Luce Gallery in McWethy Hall beginning Sunday, Nov. 4. A closing reception will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, following a 2 p.m. lecture by the artist in Room 222 of McWethy Hall.
“Spirit States” is a collection of 40 oils and acrylics on primed paper, as well as pencil drawings, ink drawings and mono-prints, produced since 1995. Landscape is a dominant theme in Moss’ work, which has been characterized as an act of faith.
Moss is George Frederick Jewett Professor of Studio Art at Dartmouth College, where he assumed the chairmanship of the studio art program in 1988. He previously taught for 13 years at the University of Iowa; served as director of the MFA and Visiting Critics Program at Fort Wright College, Spokane; and was founder of the Spokane Studio School.
Works by Moss are included in more than 43 public collections including the National Academy of Design in New York, Yale University Art Gallery, The Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador, American University, and The Tacoma Museum of Art. Moss has been a visiting artist at more than 95 institutions including Williams, Smith, Amherst, Carleton, Swarthmore, Yale, Vassar, Eton, and Trinity colleges as well as the California College of Arts and Crafts and the Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Admission is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. This exhibition and lecture are funded through the generosity of the Peter Paul Luce Foundation, Inc.
