MOUNT VERNON — Cornell College will shut down Monday, June 24, so the campus can convert its utilities to an underground system. All facilities will be closed, including Cole Library and the Hilltop Fitness Center in the Richard and Norma Small Multi-Sports Center. Facilities and offices will reopen Tuesday, June 25.
Through early August, the campus pedestrian mall is under renovation. As a safety precaution, all visitors to campus should avoid the pedestrian mall during this period of substantial demolition. Instead, use sidewalks on the north side of campus and alternate entrances to buildings along the pedestrian mall, such as the south entrance to Cole Library and north entrances to The Commons, Law Hall and Old Sem.
Lighting along the pedestrian mall has been limited due to construction, so pedestrians should use caution if they are in the area after dark.
When completed in August, the pedestrian mall will feature a new 16-foot-wide walkway of concrete pavers, distinctive lighting and approximately 75 maple trees, to be planted in the fall. A “chapel garden” featuring ornamental pear trees and a limestone terrace will be installed west of King Chapel.
