MOUNT VERNON — The status of women around the world will be addressed in a presentation, “Amnesty International and the United Nations: Challenges Before and After September 11,” on Tuesday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Hedges Conference Room of The Commons. Admission is free.

The event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters, Womyn’s Action Group, Women’s Studies Committee, and Hunger, Health, Homelessness.

Presenters will be Alice Dahle and Peg Maher. For the past 20 years, Dahle has been a member of the United Nations and Amnesty International, serving as a representative to Amnesty International’s USA’s National Committee On Human Rights. She attended the United Nations 4th World Conference in Beijing in 1995. As an active Amnesty International member, she writes appeals on behalf of women who are in danger of torture and/or imprisonment by their government. These women are primarily in the Middle East and South Africa and work in human rights.

Maher is education chair for the Iowa Division of the United Nations Association-USA. She has volunteered for the past four years in the resettlement of refugees from Africa and the Middle East. She works in the early childhood department of the Grant Wood Area Education Agency.
