MOUNT VERNON — The U.S. response to terrorism will be examined during a roundtable discussion, and Rep. Jim Leach (R-Iowa) will give the keynote address when the Iowa Conference of Political Scientists meets Saturday, Nov. 10, at Cornell College.
The conference opens with registration from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on the Orange Carpet in The Commons. Three sessions of speakers will be offered throughout the day — at 9:30 and 11 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. — in The Commons, with the keynote address, “Hobbes, Locke and the New World Order,” delivered by Leach during lunch from 12:15-1:45 p.m. in Harlan Dining Room. All conference sessions are free and open to the public. The lunch fee is $12.50; those who have not yet made reservations should contact Cornell politics professor David Loebsack, (319) 895-4300.
In the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and subsequent cases of anthrax outbreaks around the country, a roundtable discussion on “Terrorism and the U.S. Response” will be held during the 11 a.m. session in Shaw Lounge. Participants include Richard Mansbach of Iowa State University, Rodney Hall and Douglas Modde (graduate student) of the University of Iowa and Imam Ali Barghouthi of the Iowa City mosque.
