MOUNT VERNON — The story of “The Robbe...

MOUNT VERNON — The story of “The Robber Bridegroom,” “The Golden Goose” and other favorite childhood folktales fill “Story Theatre,” which will be performed at Cornell College on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13 and Oct. 19-20.

Performances are at 8 p.m. in Armstrong Theatre. General admission tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students, youth and seniors.

“Story Theatre,” adapted from tales by the Brothers Grimm and Aesop’s Fables, was written in 1971 by Paul Sills, founder of the famous Chicago improvisational theater Second City. The production also includes “The Bremen Town Musicians,” “The Fisherman and His Wife” and “The Master Thief.”

The production is directed by Ron Clark, Cornell artist in residence and co-artistic director of Riverside Theatre in Iowa City.

“It’s really a wonderful collection of stories that, with some interesting anachronisms, have a terrific freshness and appeal,” Clark says.

Set designer is Scott Olinger, assistant professor of theatre and communications studies.

“Characters become scenery and props, they create sounds from untraditional objects, things they find lying around,” Olinger says.

The scenery is inspired by the work of Eric Carle, author of well-known children’s books such as “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and “Walter the Baker,” which contain illustrations full of vivid color and texture.

Ticket reservations are not necessary but can be placed through the Armstrong Theatre Box Office, 895-4293.
